Book – Think you know web design?

We all have a different understanding when it comes to design. It is so versatile and has unlimited possibilities to an answer. This is why so many artists pop up here and there, showing their own vision of the world by calling it art. This is a very interesting field of work and I am sure we can all appreciate a good painting with some storyline attached to it. But when we think about design and art, we totally exclude the beauty that what you can present online. Yes a website is definitely an art form, but of course this depends what type of website you are making. Make a corperate blue website with low user usabilities problems, is that art?
Some might argue that it is. Some would just say, there is really no passion to your work and you have made it by keeping everything simple for the user, but not really thinking about art itself. Well, here at Nurbs at Work we actually do consider art to be very freely and with no bounderies. So basically we would actually consider that corperate blue website a piece of art if it highly functional, someone did put tons of thought into it.
But let’s take away some attention to all this philosical stuff. Let’s see if we can learn something in this post. We have recently expanded the Nurbs at Work library with a nice little book called: The Web Designer’s Idea Book
This book is written by Patrick McNeil, a very well known person in the design world. He does a lot of research on the web to point on what works and what does not.
Why get this book? Well let’s say you design a lot of websites or you are not sure which design you would want to go for when you are staring at your blanco page. Considering you have done the research already, where you know what company you are going to design first, it is good to see what others are doing. In fact, it is imperrative to know what they are doing! So before you start with your own crazy design, go do some research online, or in this very handy handbook where he made a compilation of A LOT of sites and how the good ones look like. Pick out the things that might work and also the things that will DEFENITELY not work and write them down. This will make you a better designer/artist in the end since you know where your own bounderies are to a specific job :).
For more information about web design, pick this book up and it is really a no non-sense book where examples speak for themselves. Do not expect a long story about why a website works and when it does not. It is more of a reference guide and should be used as such. We here love it!
